UGA Department of Anthropology's Jacob Holland-Lulewicz, Megan Conger, Travis Jones, Dr. Jennifer Birch, and Dr. Stephen Kowalewski published a recent paper in the Journal of Anthropological Archaeology. The article, entitled "An Institutional Approach for Archaeology," details a method for analyzing ethnographic and archaeological data that focuses on social institutions, instead of other common socio-spatial referents. They argue that this approach has particular utility for identifying how human behavior structured social processes, as opposed to other common referents, such as the "site," "settlement," or "society." This publication resulted, in part, from ideas generated during a graduate seminar co-taught by Drs. Jennifer Birch and Stephen Kowalewski in Spring 2017. Holland-Lulewicz (U. Washington, St. Louis), Conger, and Jones are all members, past and present, of the Multiscalar Archaeologies Laboratory, which is directed by Birch.
