The Cathedral of St. Domnius, depicted here, is an impressive landmark of Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Croatia. The Cathedral is known for its persistent use over the centuries, the eras marked by evident architectural changes.

This picture was taken at the Makah Reservation, which is a Native American reservationon the northwestern tip of the Olympic Peninsula in Washington. I was there on IFP (interdisciplinary field program) learning about the Makah people. This photo was shot with 35mm film on Kodak Portra 400.

This picture is of the Dungeness Ruins on Cumberland Island. I was there leading a 4 day backpacking trip for the UGA Outdoor Recreation Center and learned about the islands rich history, as well as visited some of the islands rich anthropological sites such as Dungeness and Plum Orchard Mansion. Alaska Avatar Present Tense - From a Southwestern Alaska dig on the Bering Sea known as Nunalleq (the Old Village) a few miles from the modern village of Quinhagak. These carved dolls could represent members of the community and perhaps could be sent as representatives to gatherings. If such an idea was reinstated committee meetings would be made much easier.

Skip Johnson

Learning About Our Ancestors - Kids from the Alaskan village of Quinhagak visit the dig site of Nunalleq. This is an excavation of a pre-contact site being impacted by climate change as the permafrost thaws and organic artifacts once perserved are being exposed and lost to Bering Sea storms. The local population took a lot of interest in the archaeological project an visited often. A museum for preparing and exhibiting the discoveries has been established in the town of Quinhagak and is a source of regional pride.

Fresh raindrops on pine needles at a lake in central Oregon. I stopped on my drive back from doing interviews to eat lunch by the water and got the Oregon special-- fog, rain, and a lot of beauty.

“Water is the Best Medicine” (Fagan Spring - Huntsville, Alabama) Fagan Spring is fed by an underground river flowing through a network of sinkholes and sinking streams. This special place heavily influenced my desire to study the relationships between Cherokee people, caves, and water.

I'm Spiraling... This little guy is a species of single-celled organisms called foraminifera. They only live in saltwater environments and despite creating relatively complex shells similar to mollusks, are only about the size of a white blood cell!

The Underlying Symmetry: This mesmerizing creature is what is known as a diatom, a microscopic microalgae sometimes called the "jewel of the sea" due to its opalescent colors and satisfying geometry. Fun fact: diatoms generate roughly half of all the oxygen on the planet! I just think they're neat!
