Community partners Sandy Creek Nature Center and Bear Hollow Zoo in Memorial Park provided engaging examples of the many interactions between people and animals. Bear Hollow is home to a variety of non-releasable native wildlife residents that serve as ambassadors for their species. Sandy Creek is a gateway to outdoor exploration in Athens-Clarke County and their SPLOST-funded Education & Visitor Center hosts live reptiles, amphibians, marine and freshwater aquariums, interactive natural history exhibits, and an extensive resource library. Both partners worked with the class to develop projects that drew on anthropological concepts to highlight human-animal interactions and allow students to develop communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. 

In the end, the projects aimed to create a cohesive set of resources that complemented the community partner's current programming. These projects included:

• Bear Hollow Scavenger Hunt 

• Beauty and the Bees 

• Snakes: Misunderstood Underdogs 

• Are the Animals Watching You Too? 

Speaking to junior, Lauren Marks Bowman, she said of her project, "the goal of this project was to address Sandy Creek Nature Center’s need for more volunteer trail guides while also using an anthropological lens to examine how institutions shape interactions between humans, animals, and the environment around them. Using my training as a documentarian, I was able to provide them with a 'call to action' promotional video as part of the service-learning component to encourage greater community and volunteer engagement.".
